Are you in the process of opening up a new business? If you are, one of your goals should be to develop a strong customer base. Unfortunately, many new business owners make costly mistakes. One of those mistakes is not spending enough time on promotion. Promotion is the key to running a successful and profitable business. The good and somewhat surprising news for many new business owners is that it is a lot easier to promote a new business than many originally thought.

One of the first steps that you should take to promote your business involves contacting phone companies, especially those who distribute printed phone books in your area. Although this step will not help you right away, it is a step that should be taken. You will want your business to appear in the yellow pages of your next phone book edition. Online phone books and online business directories should also be approached. This is important, as many consumers now turn to the internet, not only to shop online, but to also research local businesses.

It is important to let the general public know that you are open for business. Whether your business operates online, locally, or with a combination of both, a grand opening celebration should be held. These celebrations are often easier with storefront businesses. Put a notice in your local newspapers stating that your business is opening, with a quick summary of the products or services that you are selling. If you are having a special grand opening celebration, be sure to include specific dates.

As for the grand opening celebration itself, most business have one or two day events. During those days, be sure to have special sales or discounts. For example, offer a percentage off an entire order, specific items, or services. Another unique way to bring customers into your business is by offering free products or samples. A contest is also a good idea. With contests, you can have the requirement that a purchase is required for entry, if you wish. This approach is nice, as it can also help to increase your sales as well. If you plan to offer free samples or hold a contest, be sure to state so in all grand opening circulars, community fliers, or newspaper inserts.

If your business is a storefront operation, it is important to target those who are just passing by. Draw attention to your establishment with colorful, bold, and catchy signs. Also, consider contacting your local radio stations. This is ideal during the spring, summer, and early fall months. Many radio stations do on location broadcasts. This is a great way to draw attention to your business. Radio listeners will learn about your business, like where it is located and what you offer for sale. At the same time, those just passing by are likely to stop and see why a radio station is broadcasting in front of your establishment.

The above mentioned steps are just a few of the many ways that you can go about promoting your business when it first opens. As a reminder, your main goal is to let the general public, both locally and online, know that your business exists. As for how you can go about doing so, implement a few of the above mentioned steps, as well as any other creative ideas that you may think of.
